Isotretinoin is used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne (a certain type of severe acne) that has not been helped by other treatments, such as antibiotics. Isotretinoin has been used to treat certain other skin conditions and some types of cancer. Isotretinoin is given to people when their previous treatments for acne have not been successful.
Isotretinoin is in a class of medications called retinoids. It works by slowing the production of certain natural substances that can cause pimples to form. Isotretinoin works by increasing the rate at which old skin cells die and new skin cells are produced. It also stops the formation of blackheads or whiteheads.
Isotretinoin works by suppressing the activity of sebaceous glands in the skin. It reduces the amount of oil produced by these glands. Isotretinoin also reduces the size of the sebaceous glands and the inflammation that occurs with acne.
Isotretinoin is usually taken twice a day with meals. Take Isotretinoin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Any concerns, contact your doctor.
It may take several weeks or longer for you to feel the full benefit of isotretinoin. Your acne may get worse during the beginning of your treatment with isotretinoin. This is normal and does not mean that the medication is not working.
Isotretinoin can cause your skin to become more sensitive to all forms of UV light. While you are using Isotretinoin, it is important to protect the skin from the effects of UV light. You should try reducing the time you are exposed to direct sunlight. Areas which have been treated with Isotretinoin should not be exposed to the sun and should be covered with appropriate clothing or a high protection sun screen. Isotretinoin may make the skin all over your body more fragile or sensitive. Your skin may be more easily damaged during treatment with Isotretinoin and for some time after treatment has stopped.
You should avoid using tanning beds or lamps while you are using Isotretinoin. You must not use Isotretinoin if your skin is sunburnt.
It may cause the bones to stop growing too soon in teenagers. Isotretinoin may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
If you feel unwell or if you have concerns about a side-effect, you will need to seek advice. If you feel very ill, get medical help straight away.
Treatment with Isotretinoin can only be started in a woman once the prescriber is certain that the woman is not pregnant.
