Safe use

Using medications safely is largely a matter of common sense and caution.

The following are general guidelines to keep in mind:

You and your doctor

  • Tell your doctor everything about your medical history, including reactions to medications you've used in the past.
  • Tell the doctor about any medications you are using now, even if they are over-the-counter drugs.
  • Keep track of your reactions to a medication and report them to your doctor.
  • Ask your doctor what you can do when given a new drug. For example, are there any foods to avoid when taking the drug? Should you avoid alcohol?
  • Never change your dose schedule unless your doctor tells you to do so.
  • Ask about the addiction or dependence potential of any new drug.

You and your pharmacist

  • See if there are any written instructions that you can take with you.
  • Ask the pharmacist to explain clearly when and how to take the drug.
  • Check the ingredients of over - the - counter drugs you may be taking to ensure that your prescription doesn't interact with them.
  • If you are starting a new medication, ask your pharmacist to fill only half the prescription in case you have an adverse reaction and the drug is stopped.
  • Ask how long the medication remains effective. Don't take it after its expiration date.
  • If you are going on a vacation, make sure your drug can be used in different climates.

You and your medications

  • Never take someone else's medication; and don't share your own medicines.
  • Check the label each time you take a drug. Don't take a drug in the dark.
  • Keep your medications in a dry, safe spot.
  • Keep each medicine in the bottle from the drug store. Don't mix medicines together in a single bottle.
  • If you think you are pregnant, consult with your doctor before using any medication.
  • Destroy any unused portions of a drug and throw out the bottle.
  • If you need a certain medicine (for instance, insulin) in case of emergency, carry the information with you.

Your medicines and your children

  • Keep all medications in a locked cabinet or in a spot well out of the reach of children.
  • Ask for child-proof safety bottles.
  • Be alert and awake when giving a child medication.
  • Make sure that children know medications can be dangerous if misused.
  • Keep antidotes such as Syrup of Ipecac on hand.
  • Keep the numbers of your EMS and poison control centers handy

Warning: Never use medicines except under medical supervision.
